Kumawood movie producer, Jackson K. Bentum, has called on the government to establish a special emergency support fund for citizens facing life-threatening situations, following the death of veteran actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi, popularly known as KK.
In a heartfelt Facebook post shared after the actor’s passing, Mr. Bentum said the tragedy had prompted him to reflect on whether Ghana’s governance system adequately supports citizens during times of crisis.
According to him, when individuals encounter serious challenges beyond their control, the government should have systems in place to provide timely assistance, noting that public resources and tax revenues are meant to serve the welfare of all citizens.
Mr. Bentum lamented what he described as a system where people often struggle to access help unless they have connections to influential figures, stressing that governance should serve every Ghanaian regardless of political affiliation.
He urged successive governments to establish a dedicated emergency fund that would provide financial assistance to citizens facing critical medical and other urgent situations, using resources generated from taxpayers.
“I believe every government should establish a special fund to respond to critical situations and support citizens in times of urgent need, using the resources generated from our taxes,” he wrote.
Bentum further clarified that his comments were not politically motivated but reflected his concern as an ordinary Ghanaian seeking better support systems for vulnerable citizens.
“I am not a politician; I am simply a concerned citizen sharing my opinion,” he stated, adding that no one should lose their life because help arrived too late after a medical condition was diagnosed.
He concluded his message by calling for compassion and improved social support, saying, “Nobody is born to suffer. We all deserve care, dignity, and support.”
