Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has proposed that 10 major churches in Ghana pool resources to establish value-addition factories to process tomatoes, pepper and maize.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, Dumelo mentioned the Catholic, Methodist, Anglican, Presbyterian, Evangelical Presbyterian, ICGC, Seventh-Day Adventist and First Love churches among those that could collaborate to set up factories in regions such as Ashanti, Volta or North East.
He said government could support the initiative by providing incentives for establishing the factories and guaranteeing a ready market for the processed produce.
“What if 10 churches come together to establish a factory. This will be a value addition factory… Imagine these churches together establishing a factory in Ashanti, Volta or North East to add value to tomatoes, pepper or maize. Government on its part will also bring on board incentives for the establishment of the factory as well as ready market for the produce. Good idea?”
His proposal comes amid ongoing concerns over post-harvest losses in Ghana’s agricultural sector, with farmers in tomato and maize growing areas frequently reporting gluts and lack of processing facilities.
The post has drawn mixed reactions online, with some describing it as a practical job-creation intervention and others questioning its feasibility.
