A senior nutritionist from the Ghana Health Service, Madam Mirable Asanbaya, has advised the public to make consumption of eggs their habit due to its constituent nutrients necessary for growth.
Speaking with journalists during a workshop organized for poultry farmers, egg sellers, health workers and other stakeholders in Bibiani, Madam Mirable debunked claims by some people that eggs are not good for the health.
According to her, eggs contain micronutrients, vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidant that are good for the body.
She thus urged people to cultivate the habit of eating at least one or two eggs a day.
Madam Comfort Kyerewa Acheampong, who is the Coordinator at the Ghana National Egg Campaign Services (GNECS) and as Secretary of the World Poultry Science Association- Ghana Branch, said that they have taken it upon themselves to campaign on the need to consume healthy eggs.
According to her, they have received standardization from the Ghana Standards Authority for eggs with which they will embark on the campaign to ensure that people consume more and yet quality eggs.
“We will educate people on the standard, and this we are doing in collaboration with the dietitians, nutrition officers, and doctors, for people to get to know the standard so that shortly we can be consuming eggs based on their standards.”
Mr Samuel Kwatia, a standard officer from the Ghana Standards Authority also in his speech threw more light on the essence of standardizing eggs, saying that though there is no instituted punishment for poultry farmers and egg sellers who may go contrary to the policy, they may lose customers because consumers would be enlightened after the education.
“We will teach traders how to handle the eggs for trading purposes or consumption so that if for instance, it cracks open, the trader does not sell it or will handle it in such a way that it is consumable or that it doesn’t move from a higher grade to lower.”
The Chairman of the poultry farmers association in Bibiani, Mr John Ackah thanked the leadership of Ghana National Eggs Campaign Services for the workshop saying it will go a long way to re-energize their association and individuals to work hard to ensure the success of their business.
He lamented about the hike in the price of poultry feeds and apportioned the weakness of the association in Bibiani to it, but was of the view that their eggs can sell well if they repackage themselves strategically.
