70 dogs die, 80 others ill after eating aflatoxin-contaminated pet foods

Pet foods produced by Midwestern Pet Foods, Indiana in the United States of America are being recalled from the Ghanaian market, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has announced.

According to the FDA, “the recall is due to the presence of high inflatoxin contamination which has caused the death of 70 dogs and other illnesses in another 80.”Dog

This was communicated in a press release dated February 18, 2021.

The products that are being recalled have the following information:
• Expiry date on or before 9th July 2022, with facility number 05 found at the end of the Date Code ie. EXP:03/03/05 or 03 March/22/05.
• Registration OK-PFO-0005
• Batch Numbers: 17/10/21/05/L3 or 12/11/21/05/L2

The Pet foods variants contaminated by the aflatoxin are as follows;
• Pro Pac Original
• Sportmix
• Splash Pet food
• Sportstrail Pet food
• Nunn Better Dry Dog and Cat foods

The FDA directs that persons in possession of the above mentioned Pet foods should return them to the importer, place of purchase or any of the FDA offices across the country.

“Meanwhile, importer of the products, Doggie Dog World Enterprise, has been directed to recall all the products from the Ghanaian market” the FDA noted.

The Authority assures the public that it remains “committed to safeguarding public health and safety of consumers as mandated by the Public Health Act 2012, Act 851.”
