A heavy rainstorm on Thursday evening rendered hundreds of residents of Assin Anwiasu, a predominantly farming community in the Assin North District of the Central Region, homeless.
The chief of the area, Nana Yaw Kwanin Ababio II, who narrated the natural disaster to Angel News reporter, Kwame Owusu Asante Shadrack, said the affected residents have had the entire roofs of their homes taken off by the devastating storms.
“The rain started about 4:00pm and it’s a sad story. I’ve never witnessed anything like this. Per what I’ve seen at least about 60 houses have been affected and several things have been damaged. A woman who was indoors was hurt when her roof was ripped off”
The rain lasted for almost 2 hours and it affected about 70 houses.
The rainstorm also destroyed schools, churches and electrical appliances and properties worth millions of Ghana Cedis.
“Now hundreds of residents are displaced including Women, children and the aged are now my problems,” the chief told Kwame Owusu Asante Shadrack.
The affected victims are calling on the government and individuals to intervene with roofing sheets, cement and food.
“We need help because what has happened is not a small issue. All our things are damaged and we have no place to sleep”, a resident lamented.
Meanwhile, the Assin North NADMO Coordinator, Mr. Adamu Frimpong, who was surprised by the gravity of the disaster said, “we least expected this type of storm at this time of the year” he said.
However, we are still taking data and steps are being taken to remedy the situation.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA) cautioned Ghanaians to expect some heavy rains.
