The Principal Seismologist at the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA), Nicholas Opoku has predicted that Accra would experience more earth tremors.
He explained that Accra is an earthquake-prone zone therefore these tremors are a normal occurrence.
Speaking in a Citinews interview, the seismologist noted that residents within Accra will continue to experience the minor earthquakes until a major one occurs.
“This is not a new thing. We have been experiencing this from time to time…even the most recent ones were in 2018, 2019 and 2020..”
“What we have been saying all this while is that Accra and its environs is situated in the earthquake-prone zones so from time to time, we will be experiencing these minor earthquakes until such a time that a major one will occur,” said Mr. Nicholas Opoku.
His remarks come after some parts of Accra reported experiencing earth tremors on Monday, December 12, 2022.
According to some Ghanaians, the tremor was felt about 11:00 am.
Some residents living within McCarthy hill, Mallam, Gbawe, Adabraka and Kasoa all said they felt the mini earthquakes in their vicinities.
Mr Opoku added that the Geological Survey Authority is still assessing the level of Monday’s earth tremor. The Authority is also checking how infrastructure in the country can withstand a major earthquake in the future.
