The Birim South District manager for the National Health Insurance Scheme in the Eastern region, Benjamin Baidin has advised Ghanaians especially the people of the area to take advantage of the “December active month” to renew their insurance cards.
He said they should not wait until they are seriously sick and want to go to hospital before they seek renewal.
Speaking to the media at Akyem Asene during the renewal of NHIS cards for school children below eighteen years in the municipality, the NHIS district manager called on the people to take full opportunity of the programme and become a beneficiary.
The “December Active Month” renewal of insurance cards in the Birim South District is fully financed by the Asene Citizens Abroad Association.
Mr. Baidin educated the residents that once a person’s card is inactive and waits until he or she is sick before activation, its usage at that critical moment becomes a tall order since it requires a month before usage becomes necessary.
“This month has been designated by the National Health Insurance (NHIS) as an active month for NHIS registration. We initially grant a one-month grace period before activating your NHIS card if it has been dormant for three months or more.
“However, during this active month, even NHIS cards that had been dormant for a year or more become instantly active and are even used in hospitals. We have seen that while their cards are inactive, they don’t search for them until they are ill or in need. When their cards have been dormant for three months or longer, people frequently inquire as to whether anything can be done. If it occurs, there is nothing that can be done,” he explained.
On his part, Ghana’s representatives for the Asene Citizens Abroad Association, Jacob Asomani and Madam Olivia Sakyewaa Kyei thanked the association for their kindness to the people particularly Akyem Asene community.
Some beneficiary students of the programme expressed their excitement and sincere gratitude to the Asene Citizens Abroad Association.
