The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Public Sector Reforms, Thomas Kusi Boafo has disclosed that Gold worth $6.2 billion was exported from Ghana in 2022.
Speaking on the maiden edition of ‘W’asedie Ne Sen’ on Angel TV, Mr Boafo hinted that the huge amount of gold exported from the shores of Ghana were from various mining firms including Anglogold.
“Figures available indicates that $6.2 billion worth of Gold was exported from Ghana in 2022 alone and that included some from Obuasi…,” he told host, Kwadwo Dickson.
He further revealed that the country has ‘Gold reserves equivalent to 250 times of GDP of the country’ but has failed to utilise it to make life better for its citizens due largely to mismanagement by leaders at various levels.
The man who could not fathom why Ghana has failed to be at par with countries like Malaysia, South Korea and Brunei despite attaining independence in the same year questioned how Ghana is being managed.
Ghana, he added, ought to have more than doubled its GDP after 66 years of independence.
“Ghana’s Gross Domestice Product (GDP) from Independence till now is $80 billion, this figure should have been $400 billion now [this] shows that we have not performed well but I am shocked we are here claiming we have done well…,” he said.
He added that it is shameful that South Korea, Malaysia and Brunei who looked up to Ghana for help upon attaining independence are performing better economically than Ghana.
Mr Kusi Boafo opined that Ghana’s under-development cannot be solely blamed on politicians as the citizens have also failed to perform their part of the social contract to ensure Ghana gets the best.
“These and many issues forms part of the reasons that we have instituted a programme like this [W’asedie Ne Sen’] to help demand answers from the persons in authority and also educate the citizens on their roles…,” the host, Kwadwo Dickson said.
The programme airs every Wednesday at 1:00pm and Sundays at 5:00pm on Angel TV, Angel 102.9FM and all Angel Broadcasting Network platforms across the country.
