The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has backed the Electoral Commission’s decision to use the Ghana Card as the sole document for the upcoming registration exercise.

The Chair of the EC, Ghana (EC), Jean Adukwei Mensa at a press briefing insisted that the use of only the national identification (ID) card, popularly known as Ghana Card, for registration is the surest way to ensure the integrity of Ghana’s voter register.

According to her, the Commission will not back down on its proposal to have only the Ghana Card as the sole document of proof for registration since the other means have outdated their usability.

Making direct reference to the guarantor system, Madam Mensa said it was introduced 30 years ago because there was no form of identity then.

“Thirty years on as an evolving democracy, we now have the Ghana Card and we are saying that we must rely on it and these are the very laws that Parliament made. That is LI 2111 and it’s the surest way of ensuring or guaranteeing the integrity of our register,” she said.

Director of Elections of the ruling party, Gary Nimako told Angel Morning Show host, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah that the NPP is backing the EC over this decision because the Electoral role ought to be cleaned.

“We want us to use the Ghana Card to avoid the issue of unnecssary challenge and suspicions at voter registration centres…the arguement that not many people have the Ghana card does not hold water.

“The NPP supports that a new CI to be introduced so that the sole means of identification in the registration process would be the NIA card…,” he said.

He further called on Parliament to allow the EC to lay a new CI that would allow this process.
