A Deputy Director of Communication of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn has said that the party cannot guarantee Jean Mensah’s continuous stay in office as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) if the party wins the 2024 elections.
Speaking on Angel Morning Show on Friday, 18th August 2023, the former Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Director has become too stubborn to all minority parties since becoming the Chairperson of the EC.
The refusal of the Jean Mensah-led administration to succumb to pressure for the commission to withdraw the use of Ghana Card as the sole document for voter registration is a recent example of how ‘stubborn’ she has become.
“Currently we can’t do anything about it because she is our Electoral Commissioner…what I know is that we cannot sack her by law but time will tell…she can resign or decide not to work again…it’s just a matter of time…,” he told host, Okatakyie Arifa-Mensah.
The Chair of the EC, Ghana (EC), Jean Adukwei Mensa at a press briefing insisted that the use of only the national identification (ID) card, popularly known as Ghana Card, for registration is the surest way to ensure the integrity of Ghana’s voter register.
According to her, the Commission will not back down on its proposal to have only the Ghana Card as the sole document of proof for registration since the other means have outdated their usability.
Making direct reference to the guarantor system, Madam Mensa said it was introduced 30 years ago because there was no form of identity then.
“Thirty years on as an evolving democracy, we now have the Ghana Card and we are saying that we must rely on it and these are the very laws that Parliament made. That is LI 2111 and it’s the surest way of ensuring or guaranteeing the integrity of our register,” she said.
Her decision to go ahead with the Ghana Card as the sole document for the registration, Ako Gunn said is nothing but a testament to his claims.
He therefore assured that the continuous stay in office of the female EC is only hinged on time.
