The Presidential Elections Committee of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) has cancelled its planned run-off exercise between Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimo.
The initially planned run-off slated for Saturday, September 2, 2023, was meant to break the tie between the two flagbearer hopefuls –Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko.
But, the former Energy Minister, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, announced his withdrawal from the race over concerns about the decision to allow only National Council Members of the party to vote in the run-off tie.
“I refuse to be a part of such an act that seeks to unjustly truncate a previously agreed upon process, and cannot be part of what is about to be done on Saturday, 2nd September 2023. I cannot, with a clear conscience make such an impermissible concession to such an errant decision. I, therefore, respectfully, serve this notice to refrain from such a contest. As always, I wish the party well,” he said in a letter addressed to Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, Chairman of the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee, dated August 31, 2023.
The Presidential Elections Committee after an emergency meeting on Thursday called off the run-off elections.
“We take note of your decision to withdraw from the contest and therefore the run-off elections scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2023, will no longer be held,” it said.
In effect, Francis Addai-Nimoh will automatically join the four other candidates who had already been elected via the voting process for the November 4 primaries.
Other candidates include Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai-Nimoh.
