The Presidential candidate of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai, popularly known as Odike, has adjudged the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) approval of Ghana’s $600m economic bailout as undignifying.
According to the 2024 flagbearer aspirant, the amount to be paid to the country is ridiculous because of its insignificance.
In a studio panel discussion hosted by Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah on the Angel Morning Show, he said, “Let me emphasise that the $600m IMF money is chicken money.”
He expressed disappointment in the past and present leadership of the country for always celebrating mediocrity at the expense of the youth’s standard of living.
Odike stressed saying, “It is very embarrassing for a country like Ghana to be taking delight in such IMF borrowings and others…”
According to the businessman, President Akufo-Addo has “disgraced himself” for mismanaging the nation’s economy, putting Ghanaians in a very tight corner, and that “posterity will never forgive him.”
On his part, fellow panel member, Nii Amasah Namoale who is also a former Member of Parliament (MP) La-Dadekotoponn argued that spare parts dealers at Abossey Okai can afford to raise the amount in question with ease.
“The $600m, how can this peanut be seen as money? If you go to Abossey Okai, their assets there alone are worth more than $1 billion. And when you put together all the Abossey Okai spare parts dealers, they can easily raise $600m for you, so this $600m is nothing,” he added.
Despite his conviction, the former NDC MP advised the ruling government to ensure that they use the money for its intended purposes.
