Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Narh Nartey, has emphasised the crucial role the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) should play, in ensuring comprehensive public education on the contentious ‘Anti-LGBTQ+’ Bill.
The Bill, recently approved by Parliament and awaiting presidential assent, has sparked widespread debate and concern among Ghanaians.
Speaking on the Angel Morning Show on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, the former lawmaker urged caution in the implementation of the Bill once signed into law. He stressed the importance of a thorough examination of the legislation to fully understand its implications, emphasizing the need to carefully weigh its pros and cons.
Mr. Nartey recommended a proactive approach, stating, “When the President assents to this bill, it is imperative to disseminate millions of copies, with a special emphasis on involving the NCCE for a robust public education campaign.”
The call for extensive education stems from Mr. Nartey’s observation that there is a lack of understanding among the populace regarding the bill’s purpose. Recognising the importance of informed discourse, he underscored the necessity of enlightening the public on the subject matter to ensure proper comprehension.
The ‘Anti-LGBTQ+’ Bill, which aims to impose sanctions on individuals engaged in such activities and those funding and sponsoring LGBTQ+ activities, has faced criticism from various quarters.
Local and international stakeholders, including the International Monetary Fund, Civil Society Organisations, and Legal experts, have expressed reservations about the proposed legislation.
Despite its passage by parliament, the bill is pending presidential assent and has sparked intense discussions due to concerns that it may infringe upon fundamental human rights.
