The Zoomlion Foundation has called for an advocacy campaign focused on mass education to combat plastic waste and promote sustainable environmental practices.
This initiative aims to raise awareness of plastic pollution’s dangers and encourages responsible waste disposal, recycling, and environmental stewardship.
National Coordinator Thomas Narh Korley, in an interview emphasized that through educational programs, community engagement, and partnerships with schools and organizations, the Foundation seeks to cultivate a culture of sustainability.
By equipping future generations with the knowledge and practices for environmental protection, they hope to create a cleaner, healthier Ghana.
Thomas Narh Korley noted that the campaign aligns with global sustainability goals, specifically targeting plastic waste reduction due to its threats to ecosystems, water bodies, and public health.
In partnership with Blueskies and FreshPPact, the Foundation organized a workshop focused on developing policies for alternative plastic products in Ghana.
This collaboration seeks to promote innovative solutions and actionable policies for reducing plastic use and encouraging eco-friendly alternatives.
Dr. Ebenezer Laryea, an Associate Professor in Sustainable Development and Law at the University of Northampton, also stressed the need for plastic waste reduction in Ghana, especially in agriculture, where plastic waste negatively impacts soil quality and water resources. Dr. Laryea called for robust policies to support sustainable practices and encourage the use of biodegradable alternatives.
Dr. Ebenezer Laryea explained that plastic waste affects not only soil health and crop yields but also compromises food safety as microplastics enter the food chain. He emphasized that sustainable agriculture in Ghana requires an urgent transition to eco-friendly practices and materials. Reducing plastic waste, particularly single-use plastics, is crucial for maintaining agricultural productivity and protecting water bodies from contamination.
The Zoomlion Foundation’s campaign is not only a call to action for individuals but also a collective effort involving schools, businesses, NGOs, and policymakers.
By creating awareness and implementing sustainable practices, the Foundation aims to contribute to Ghana’s long-term environmental resilience, aligning with global standards and ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for generations to come.
