Ghana’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), George Akufo Dampare, has pledged that his men will uphold and safeguard law and order, peace, and order in the forthcoming general elections.
Delivering an address on Thursday, November 28, 2024, in Kempinski, Accra, he stated that anyone who tampers with the elections will face legal repercussions from the police.
“The police service is going to deal with whoever messes up in the elections in accordance with the law,” he stated.
He expressed gratitude for the many compliments on the police protection during the by-elections. That won’t, however, diminish the positive service that the police provide to the decent citizens of the country.
“The police service is grateful for the numerous positive comments regarding the safeguarding of the police during by-elections. However, that isn’t going to eat up the good service the police render to the good people of the nation,” he expressed.
He believes the police service has been proactive in ensuring security services from the commencement of electoral registration to the movement of logistics, and that the police service will continue to reinforce the security of the people in the approaching polls, which take place in a week.
“The police service has been walking-the-talking in ensuring security services from the beginning of electoral registration to the movement of logistics and, the police service will continue to strengthen the security of the people in the upcoming polls which comes off in a week time,” he added.
He argues that the election day blueprint tries to provide a very precise, deployed approach at voting stations, coalition centres, rapid responses, and post-election activities in terms of security measures.
“The blueprint for the day of elections seeks to render a very detailed, deployed strategy at polling stations, coalition centres, rapid responses and post-election activities in terms of security arrangements in elections,” he said.
He denounced the police service’s readiness to provide security in the upcoming polls and urged political parties, stakeholders, and the general public to assist the police service in prayer as well as play their roles in ensuring peace to the satisfaction of the entire nation in the 2024 election outcome.
“The police service is prepared to provide security in the upcoming polls and I urge political parties, stakeholders, and the general public to assist the police service in prayer while also playing their roles in ensuring peace to the satisfaction of the entire nation in the 2024 election outcome,” he noted.
