Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has condemned recent raids conducted by National Security operatives on political opponents under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
He criticized the development, expressing that it is becoming too frequent under the John Dramani Mahama-led administration.
Afenyo-Markin’s comments follow the recent invasion of the residences of former Minister for Finance Ken Ofori-Atta and former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison by alleged National Security operatives.
Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem Sai, responding to public backlash over these raids, defended them as sanctioned and carried out within the confines of the law.
Afenyo-Markin, on his X handle, described the occurrences as a fundamental assault on democracy.
He further accused the incumbent government of using state security apparatus to intimidate political opponents.
“Abusing the Rights of political opponents is a fundamental assault on our democracy! Ms Shamima Muslim and Dr Justice Srem-Sai should not have been deployed to defend such unlawful actions by the Government!” the post reads.
The Minority Leader, who is the Member of Parliament for Effutu, highlights the need for President John Mahama to intervene.
“Mr President, you are widely perceived as a moderate, but these acts of abuse of power by your HAWKS, which are also defended by your own Deputy Spokesperson and Deputy Attorney General, speak very negatively of your leadership. Please reign in your HAWKS now!”
