A Communication Team Member for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ellen Ama Daaku, has stated that the galamsey menace in the country is getting worse under President John Dramani Mahama’s government.
According to her, during the tenure of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) claimed that they would use one week to solve the galamsey issue in the country; however, the situation is worsening under their government.
“Now, President Mahama has spent three months in his government, and the one week they promised is gone. What is he doing to us? It seems to be getting worse under him,” she stated.
Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Monday, March 24, 2025, she asserted that Ghanaians should not blame their members (NPP) for the current state of the galamsey menace in the country, but should instead hold the chairmen, constituency secretaries, and women organizers of the NDC accountable for their involvement in the illegal mining business.
She further explained that President Mahama promised Ghanaians during his 2024 campaign that he would continue fighting galamsey after being handed power.
Ms. Ama Daaku added that President Mahama accused the immediate past president, Nana Addo, of having the responsibility to fight galamsey; meanwhile, in her view, his administration is handling it worse than the NPP administration.
She said, “Three months down the line, regarding the galamsey issues, what are you doing about it for us? You told President Nana Addo that it is his responsibility to fight galamsey, so when he hands over power to you, you’ll also continue. His Excellency Mahama, so now what are your plans? The people are still doing galamsey.”
