Government, GoldFields reach agreement on Damang Goldmine transition

Must Read

The Government and GoldFields Ghana Limited announced an agreement to ensure a smooth transition for the Damang Mine, a key gold mining site in the Western Region.

The agreement, according to Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, grants a 12-month mining lease to GoldFields’ subsidiary, Abosso Goldfields Limited.

This lease, pending parliamentary approval in May 2025, will serve as the operational framework during the transition period.

Under the arrangement, GoldFields will resume open-pit mining at the site, a move expected to safeguard jobs, sustain local economic activity, and support feasibility studies to assess the mine’s reserves and long-term potential.

The processing of existing stockpiles will also continue, overseen by a joint management team comprising representatives from both the Government and GoldFields.

“Additionally, both parties have pledged to continue their partnership in good faith regarding the renewal of the Tarkwa mine lease, which is due in 2027.”
