The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has issued a clarion call for urgent and sustained national action to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, describing it as a grave threat to Ghana’s environment, public health, and future development.
In a resolution adopted during its 2025 Mid-Year Conference at the Labadi Beach Hotel, the GBA condemned the ongoing galamsey operations, which continue to devastate water bodies, farmlands, and entire ecosystems across the country.
The Association stated unequivocally: “The Ghana Bar Association unequivocally condemns the ongoing galamsey activities across the country and calls for immediate, decisive, and sustained action by all arms of government, law enforcement agencies, and relevant stakeholders to eradicate the menace.”
In a pointed appeal to the Judiciary, the GBA urged the expeditious handling of galamsey-related cases, emphasizing that accountability under the law must be swift and impartial. “The GBA urges the Judiciary to prioritize and expedite the hearing of galamsey-related cases, ensuring that offenders are held accountable in accordance with the law, without fear or favour,” the resolution stated.
