The Western Regional Anti-Galamsey Taskforce has intensified its clampdown on illegal mining activities along the River Ankobra in the region.
Acting under the directive of the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, the taskforce over the weekend carried out a major raid spanning from upstream Gwira Wiaso to Gwira Eshiem.

This led to the destruction of 153 changfang machines and several makeshift structures used by illegal miners.
In the operation, the taskforce also seized one generator, control boards from seven excavators, six water pumping machines, and an outboard motor.

The Western Regional Minister has reaffirmed his dedication to safeguarding the region’s natural resources, assuring the public that the recent operation marks only the beginning.
“The action reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to environmental preservation and responsible leadership,” he said quoted by the Information Service Department of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Assembly.

He has directed the taskforce to continue regular patrols to ensure the complete restoration of the Ankobra River and its surroundings.
