Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, says the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is closely and actively monitoring the situation in conflict zones Bawku and nearby communities in the Upper East Region as well as Alavanyo in the Volta Region.
He described the situation in these areas as “volatile”, but was quick to express the government’s readiness to curtail any possible escalation while continuing to monitor developments.
Speaking during his sector’s maiden presentation on activities over the last six months, as part of the Government Accountability Series, he indicated the government’s preparedness with robust mechanisms to protect lives.
“We acknowledge that the situation in Bawku and Alavanyo and their immediate surroundings remains volatile. The Ghana Armed Forces is actively monitoring and has put in place robust mechanisms to ensure any potential escalation is swiftly contained in the interest of the people and long-lasting resolution of the conflict through dialogue.”
“In doing so, we shall always separate crimes from traditional matters, enabling us to deal appropriately and legally with criminals who foment trouble in the name of chieftaincy conflict,” the minister highlighted on Monday, July 21, 2025.
Dr. Omane Boamah added that the government remains dedicated to pursuing a peaceful resolution in the area; however, elements of crime would be dealt with.
