Electorate in the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region are casting their votes today, Tuesday, September 2, 2025, to choose a new Member of Parliament after the passing of Ernest Kumi, the former MP.

The by-election, which has drawn nationwide attention, is expected to see participation from more than 50,000 registered voters.

It has become a crucial contest between the two dominant political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following the Electoral Commission’s disqualification of the Action Peoples Party (APP) and its parliamentary candidate, David Ankomah.

Representing the NDC is Bernard Bediako Baidoo, while the NPP has presented Solomon Kwame Asumadu as its candidate.

Both candidates have committed to peace, assuring that calm will prevail during and after the election. Mr. Asumadu positioned himself as a man of peace and stressed that he would play his role in ensuring the exercise is not marred by violence.

“Anyone who knows my personality in Akwatia can attest that I’m a man of peace and for that regardless of the election outcome I’ll make sure that it doesn’t turn out to bring any problem to a relative or a friend. So I’m giving your listeners an assurance,” he said on Angel TV on Monday, September 1.

The NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo also guaranteed an incident-free election, emphasizing that peace in Akwatia will be preserved at all costs.

“There has been a lot of commentaries on this particular election, enabling you outsiders to panic that Akwatia will be this and that…. Akwatia will not turn into anything. Not everyone in Akwatia is into politics, so if they cause mayhem in the area, where would they go? So we understand ourselves and have completed various campaigns for the election tomorrow.

“We will go out to vote peacefully, count peacefully, declare the results peacefully, and leave as one people because we seek development at the end of the day,” he said on the same network.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has deployed 6,000 officers across the constituency to ensure peace and order are maintained before, during, and after the electoral process.
