The Member of Parliament for the Akyem Oda Constituency in the Eastern Region, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has described the removal of the Chief Justice as a ‘major achievement’ of President John Mahama’s administration.

He said the President’s decision to relieve Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo of her duties is the only notable feat of the incumbent government since assuming office.

Speaking to Ohemaa Sakyiwaa on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Thursday, September 4, 2025, the MP condemned the move, claiming the President is abusing his executive powers.

“President Mahama has clearly shown the Judiciary that the powers they once held have been taken away. For the first time, no one can defend that he is innocent. What he has done will go down in Ghana’s history books, he sacked a Chief Justice. It is a major achievement,” Mr. Acquah asserted.

He noted that the matter is gaining global attention due to how it has been reported in the media across various communities.

“It has become a topic of discussion among the international community, even making headlines: ‘President of the Republic of Ghana sacks Chief Justice,’” he added.

The former Deputy Health Minister urged the President to continue exercising his constitutional powers and take any decision he deems fit.

“He should consult the constitution and act within its provisions, so we can understand that he is on track with his resetting agenda,” Mr. Acquah stated.

According to him, Mr. Mahama’s decision not only sets a dangerous precedent but also poses a threat to the integrity of the judicial service.

He further served notice that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will equally invoke Article 146, the same provision used by Mr. Mahama to remove the outgoing Chief Justice should they assume power, to dismiss the next CJ.
