President John Dramani Mahama has vehemently condemned assaults on journalists while performing their duties.
Addressing the journalists at the Presidential Media Encounter at Jubilee House on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, he noted that journalists play a crucial role in bringing news to the public, often covering events first-hand, yet some security officials frequently harass them, hindering their work.
“I condemn assaults on Journalists in any form, Journalists are doing their job and their job is to bring news to the doorsteps of our people, and to inform them, educate and entertain them.
“For every event, you will have journalists there, unfortunately, some security personnel have developed the passion for harassing journalists,” he said.
According to him, collaboration between journalists and security agencies is essential, and he is working with the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, to promote awareness and understanding, ensuring journalists can work freely at events, and to establish sanctions to those who assault them.
He affirmed that he is committed to protecting journalists, stating that as long as he remains a member of the GJA, he will not condone any attacks on them.
“Definitely as a member of the GJA and a lifetime member of the GJA, there is no way I will condone assaults of journalists in any form,” he reiterated.
