The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has cut sod for the reconstruction of the 14.2-kilometer Samahu–Pepesa road in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region.
The two-year project, estimated at over GHS63 million, is expected to bring lasting relief to communities that have endured the road’s deplorable condition for decades.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Executive Secretary of the Foundation, Mr. Razak, said earlier patchworks on the road had been unsustainable. This investment, however, would deliver a fully engineered double-seal resin road with modern safety and drainage features.
“All the road furnishing, including speed ramps, zebra crossings, and signage, will be completed to ensure safety,” he assured.
The project includes culverts and 0.6-meter drains at critical points to prevent flooding and protect the road structure. Though no bridges are planned, culverts will channel water safely away from the surface, he noted.
Emmanuel Ahinakwa, project engineer with Classic Cristken—the local company executing the works reported that 10 kilometers of the road have already been cleared, with full clearing expected next week.
“Once this phase is done, we will begin scarifying and constructing drains so that the main works can start,” he explained.
He added that the company has been engaging chiefs and stakeholders from surrounding communities to ensure smooth execution.
“The chiefs have been supportive, and since many road users rely on motorcycles, we are working with them to promote safety during construction,” he said.
The chief of Huniso, Nana Nvida, recalled the struggles of residents who depend mainly on farming but have suffered high transport costs due to the road’s poor state.
“Farmers are forced to sell their produce at low prices because transporting goods erodes their income,” he lamented, while thanking Gold Fields for addressing the long-standing burden.
Classic Cristken, known for its work on similar projects and safety record with Gold Fields Tarkwa Mine, has pledged to employ locals throughout the 24-month period to extend economic benefits to host communities.
To ensure quality delivery, the Foundation has engaged The Hock, a consultancy firm with decades of road construction expertise, to provide technical supervision.
The Prestea Huni Valley Municipal Chief Executive, Dr. Matthew Aya, also pledged the assembly’s support and oversight.
Through this project, Gold Fields Foundation aims to not only improve transport infrastructure but also enhance safety, boost economic activities, and deepen its partnership with the people of Prestea Huni Valley.
