The Ghana Education Service (GES) has marked the International Day of the Girl Child with an important step aimed at promoting the welfare and dignity of school girls across the country.
In a bid to address menstrual hygiene challenges and ensure no girl misses school during her menstrual period, the GES announced the distribution of over 6,607,095 sanitary pads to school girls in all 16 regions of Ghana.
According to a statement signed by the head of Public Relations of the GES, Daniel Fenyi, on Saturday, October 11, 2025, the initiative is part of the Government of Ghana’s commitment to provide free sanitary pads to all school girls from basic to second cycle on a monthly basis throughout their school life.
The distribution highlights the government’s commitment to improving menstrual hygiene, promoting gender equality in education, and safeguarding the health and confidence of adolescent girls.
“The Ghana Education Service assures all school girls of its continuous support and reiterates its dedication to building an education system that is inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the needs of every learner,” the statement read.
The Service encourages girls to stay focused on their studies and take full advantage of the opportunities provided to them.
The GES extended heartfelt appreciation to the Ministry of Education for their efforts in operationalizing this life-changing initiative for school girls across the country.
This initiative aligns with the theme of the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child, “The Girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis,” emphasizing the collective responsibility to support the growth, education, and empowerment of every girl in Ghana and beyond.
