Mental health care should be Ghana’s priority – Ayaba

Corporate Affairs Officer of Tema Oil Refinery, Godwin Mahama Ayaba, has said that the government should prioritize and give serious attention to citizens’ mental health.

He pointed out that most health practitioners and institutions often do not pay much attention to mental health within the healthcare system.

According to Mr. Ayaba, issues related to mental health must be the country’s priority to help reduce incidents of killings.

His proposal follows an incident where a man reportedly set ablaze his wife and six children and then killed himself at Dunkwa in the Central Region.

“What will trigger you to set up fire on other human beings and and also commit suicide without thinking twice,” he added.

Mr. Ayaba said this on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

He emphasized the importance of regular mental health check-ups, encouraging everyone to prioritize their mental well-being and make it a habit.

Mr. Ayaba further appealed to health officials to make mental illness diagnosis and treatment more affordable and accessible.

“Even when people want to seek help for mental health issues, they are not able to afford the cost associated with it,” he said.
