The Chairman for Tema West Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwasi Opoku, has urged communicators of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stop praising President John Dramani Mahama for visiting victims of the El-Wak stadium stampede.
Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) Thursday, November 13, 2025 on the stampede that claimed the lives of six lives at a recent military recruitment in Accra, he emphasized that President Mahama was simply performing his duties.
“Sometimes when people are performing their lawful duties, let’s not give them credit,” he told Ohemaa Sakyiwaa
He argued that the medical team at the 37 Military Hospital, who treated the injured, deserved the recognition instead.
“His presence didn’t put a drip or give injections to the injured patients; it was the 37 hospital medical team who proactively executed their job,” he added.
Mr. Opoku noted that, Mr. Mahama had approved the recruitment process and was obligated to visit the scene, suggesting that praise would allow him to politicize the incident for campaign points.
He further stressed that the real issue, which is mismanagement of the recruitment process should be the focus, not the President’s immediate response.
“Putting young people in the sun caused this misfortune, not his early presence. This shouldn’t be discussed anywhere,” he added.
