Interior Minister, Mutaka Mohammed, has announced a nationwide Gun Amnesty Program, describing it as a bold and compassionate initiative aimed at reducing the circulation of illicit firearms across the country.

Speaking at a press conference at the Information Services Department in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, Mr. Mutaka explained that the Gun Amnesty Program is a window of grace, offering all law-abiding Ghanaians who possess unregistered or illicit firearms the opportunity to surrender them without fear of interrogation.

He noted that last year saw a troubling rise in robbery and murder incidents and added that the middle of 2025 reports from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Ghana Police Service (GPS) highlights a significant increase.

“In 2024, there were 1,200 reported robbery cases and 552 murder cases.

“As of July this year, statistics from the CID and the Police Service show that in just half of the year, the country has already recorded 628 armed robbery cases and 340 murder cases,” he revealed.

Speaking further, Hon. Mutaka Mohammed, who doubles as Member of Parliament for Asawase Constituency, has emphasized that during the amnesty period, anyone who voluntarily surrenders illicit firearms at designated collection points will be praised, not punished

He added that individuals will be recognized as patriots, actively contributing to the peace and safety of the nation.
