The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced revised tariffs for electricity and water, set to take effect on January 1, 2026, as part of its multi-year review covering the period 2026–2030.
Under the new structure, electricity charges will increase by 9.86 percent across all consumer groups, while water tariffs will go up by 15.92 percent over the five-year regulatory cycle.
“The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) wishes to inform the general public that it has completed the 2025–2030 Multi-Year Tariff Review Order (MYTO) for electricity, natural gas and water tariffs. The review of existing tariffs will take effect from 1st January, 2026.
“A 9.86% increase in electricity tariffs across all categories of electricity customers. A 15.92% upward review of water tariffs for all customer classes over the tariff control period (2026–2030).,” a PURC statement announced.
PURC explained that the adjustments are aimed at meeting the investment needs of utility companies, maintaining competitiveness within the sector, and protecting the interests of consumers.
The review also provides for quarterly revisions to reflect external factors beyond the control of service providers, such as exchange rate movements, inflation, fuel prices, and changes in the generation mix.
In addition, tariffs for mini-grids have been introduced to expand electricity access in island communities, with the associated costs incorporated into the Volta River Authority’s revenue framework.
The Commission stressed that the decision was reached after broad stakeholder engagement, public hearings, and careful assessment of proposals submitted by utility providers.
It further assured the public that it will continue to oversee service providers to guarantee efficiency, value for money, and compliance with regulatory standards.
