The Ga West Municipal Assembly has ordered the immediate closure of China Mall over severe fire safety violations following a blaze that injured a customer on Sunday, December 28, 2025.
The Municipal Chief Executive(, John Desmond Sowah Nai, stated in a release that a joint inspection found that the mall is structurally unsafe and insecure, posing a serious risk to anyone inside, including workers and visitors.
โA joint inspection was conducted by members of the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) and relevant technical officers of the Assembly.
โThe inspection clearly established that security, safety, and structural integrity at the Mall have been seriously compromised, exposing patrons, workers, and the general public to imminent danger,โ the statement noted.
According to the statement, management of the facility has been directed to close down the mall with immediate effect from Monday, December 29, 2025 at 2:00pm, pending the fulfilment of strict safety conditions.
โA comprehensive structural integrity assessment is conducted by a certified structural engineer.
โAll identified structural defects, safety lapses, and overloading issues are fully corrected.
โThe facility is subjeeted to re-inspection and certification by the relevant departments of the Ga West Municipal Assembly, including the Physical Planning. Works, Environmental Health, and Fire Service.
โWritten safety clearance and authorization is issued by the Assembly before reopening,โ the statement outlined.
The Ga West Municipal Assembly has directed the management of the Amasaman China Mall to fully cooperate with the Assembly, cautioning that any attempt to operate the facility in defiance of the directive will attract sanctions in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), and other applicable laws.
The Assembly also urged Management also to treat the matter with urgency.
