Deputy National Fields Director for United Party (UP), Afia Korankyewaa has stated that political interference has made it difficult to combat illegal mining (Galamsey).
Speaking on ‘Anɔpa Bɔfoɔ’ show on Tuesday, January 22, 2026, she explained that politicization in galamsey has stifled the country’s development.
According to Madam Korankyewaa, “during the New Patriotic Party’s ( NPP) era, it was hard to fight Galamsey because the National Democratic Congress( NDC), visited mining sites to promise miners they would show them better ways to mine if elected.”
She alleged that political interference from the NDC made it difficult for the NPP to fight Galamsey because of the press conference held at mining sites by NDC to fight illegal mining if elected, which helped them to pull out massive votes.
“NDC also promised to organize miners into groups, employing methods that would protect water bodies and forest reserves from damage.
“Every government finds it difficult to fight Galamsey because political interference is huge which hinders the fight of galamsey in the country,” she said.
