Legendary highlife musician, Obuoba A.J. Adofo, has opened up about a terrifying ordeal he experienced in Nigeria, revealing how he narrowly escaped being robbed and killed after traveling there to receive payment for a music project.
Speaking in an interview on Y’adumanie on Angel FM on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the veteran musician recounted that the incident occurred shortly after he had performed in Ghana and recorded music for a producer who insisted he would only pay him in Nigeria.
According to Obuoba Adofo, the producer first traveled to Ghana to record him and later requested that they both journey to Nigeria for his payment.
“An incident happened to me in Nigeria. I went alone that time. Before that, a producer came to Ghana and recorded me and told me he would pay me, but unless we go to Nigeria,” he said.
The musician explained that they arrived in Nigeria very late at night. After the producer withdrew the money from the bank, Obuoba requested that he should buy him a car, but due to the late hour and the factory being closed, they decided to wait until the next day.
“So he booked a hotel for me alone and handed all the money to me because he said he couldn’t take all the money along with him,” he added.
Obuoba Adofo said his instincts were raised that evening, when he went downstairs to have tea and encountered two men speaking Twi, a Ghanaian language.
“I saw two men sitting there drinking and speaking Twi, so I told them I’m from Ghana, and they also said they’re from Ghana too,” he narrated.
He continued that after introducing himself as Obuoba Adofo, the men warned him not to sleep at the hotel, claiming it was a place where people were often robbed and killed, and advised him to follow them instead.
However, fearing they might also steal his money, he declined their offer.
In a desperate attempt to protect himself, the musician said he devised an unusual survival plan.
“I went back to the room and saw a big ‘borla’ behind the hotel, and I planned to sleep there and pretend as if I’m a mad person so I can sleep there till the next day,” he explained.
Obuoba Adofo revealed that his decision likely saved his life.
“So I slept on the borla and the next day the hotel was robbed, and people were killed,” he said.
When the producer later returned and asked about his whereabouts during the incident, Obuoba said he told him he had spent the night at a friend’s place. He later bought the car for him and came back to Ghana.
“So he bought the car, and I came back to Ghana,” he concluded.
