Look for highly absorbent diapers for children’s safety – Korle Bu medical officer advises mothers

A Chief Midwifery Officer at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has advised mothers to pay close attention to the absorbency of diapers they purchase for their babies, stressing that quality products can help promote child health and safety.

Shirley Boateng Gyasi, who is in charge of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the hospital, said highly absorbent diapers can help keep babies dry for longer periods, reducing discomfort and the risk of skin irritation.

“The diapers soak water a lot, so even if you don’t have someone to assist you in caring for your child, the baby can wear the diaper for a longer time and remain comfortable,” she said.

She explained that in the past, many mothers relied on reusable napkins which had to be washed and reused. However, the availability of disposable diapers has made child care more convenient for many families.

“First, we used to wash napkins and reuse them for children, but now diapers are disposable and can be thrown away after use. It is good for the children,” she added.

Her remarks were made during the official launch and donation ceremony of Hunnies Baby Diapers at the hospital.

The event formed part of a corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at supporting lactating mothers.

Country Manager of Hunnies Baby Diapers, Nana Baffoe Biney, said the company chose Korle Bu for the donation because of its significance as one of the country’s leading health facilities.

“We came here to donate to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and also introduce our products. Korle Bu is one of the major health facilities in the country, and promoting maternal health in society is part of our corporate responsibility,” he said.

Some mothers at the event expressed appreciation for the support, noting that such donations can help ease financial pressure, particularly for those who are already struggling with medical bills and other expenses.

Health professionals at the event emphasised that while donations are welcome, parents should prioritize the health and comfort of their babies by selecting safe, hygienic and highly absorbent diapers.

They also encouraged continued collaboration between healthcare institutions and private organisations to support maternal and child health across the country.
