One person has been shot dead following a shootout between the police and suspected armed robbers in the Bono Region, leading to the recovery of five assorted firearms.

According to the Bono Regional Police Command, the weapons were retrieved during an intelligence-led operation targeting notorious robbery gangs operating within the region.

Police reports indicated that a gang had planned to attack traders travelling along the Dormaa-Gonokrom highway. Surveillance teams were immediately deployed to the area to prevent the intended robbery.

In the early hours of Thursday, February 12, 2026, officers advanced towards a parked motorbike near the highway and came under gunfire from nearby bushes. The police returned fire and conducted a search at daybreak, which revealed one male suspect dead, with an AK-47 rifle found beside him.

A further search of the area led to the discovery of a sack containing more weapons and ammunition.

Items retrieved included two Baikal single-barrel guns, a pump-action gun, one Beretta pistol loaded with three rounds of 9mm ammunition, an additional 34 rounds of 9mm ammunition, one AK-47 rifle loaded with 11 rounds plus 10 extra rounds, 39 rounds of BB cartridges, one dagger, a mobile phone, a Honda motorbike, a black mask, and a set of talismans.

The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
