Kpone landfill site has one month operational life – Local Gov’t Minister

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has revealed that the Kpone landfill site has only one month of operational life remaining.

During a media briefing, he emphasized that, after this period, households, hospitals, and industries in the eastern part of Accra will have no place to dispose of their refuse.

During his visit to the site, Ibrahim confirmed that both the contractor and the Mayor, alongside the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), corroborated the grim forecast: in about a month, Accra will face significant sanitation challenges.

“Even we are in the dry season, so if in a month’s time the whole of Accra isn’t going to have anywhere to dump their waste, there’s going to be a serious problem,” he stated.

Moreover, he pointed out that moving waste from Accra East to Accra West or to Nsawam would not be a viable solution, asserting, “They can’t also move from Accra East to Accra West or somewhere like Nsawam before they will be able to dispose of their domestic or industrial waste; it’s going to be a serious problem.”

To address this pressing issue, Ibrahim assured that proactive measures would be taken to engage both the private and public sectors in finding a solution.

He further indicated that a necessary cabinet information paper would be submitted to the President to prompt decisive action on this matter.
