Keta Port operations will end incidence Customs evasion – Ako Gunn

The Deputy National Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gun, has stated that the Keta Port, when operational, will eliminate the incidence of tax evasion by importers of goods to landlocked countries.

Speaking on the “Anopa Bofoɔ” morning show on Angel FM, hosted by Ohemaa Sekyiwaa on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, he emphasised that Keta is the shortest route and closest to the countries located north of Ghana, making it economically viable.

Mr. Gunn asserted that the government is committed to completing the Keta Port to help combat tax evasion, which will also generate additional funds for the efficient operation of import processes in Ghana.

He added that collaboration with these landlocked countries is essential for establishing railway lines from the port to their final destinations.

This will ensure that once goods arrive at the port, they can be transported directly to their intended countries without the risk of tax evasion through vehicle transport.

“The most important thing for the future is that we must collaborate with these landlocked countries to develop a railway line from the ports to their destinations without relying on road transport. This is the reason we are prioritising the completion of Keta Port,” he stated.

He also suggested that ECOWAS countries can work together to advance the collection of taxes on goods destined for those countries.

This system would involve the collection of taxes by the port country and transferring those funds to the destination country before the goods arrive.

Thus, even if the goods are diverted before reaching their intended destination, the taxes would already be accounted for, ensuring that no country is negatively affected.

“In collaboration with them, we can collect their taxes here and transfer the funds to them, so if the goods do not reach their destination, they have already paid the tax. Therefore, they must reach their final destination,” he stated.
