Businessman and leader of the Union Government, Akwasi Addae Odike, has cautioned that Ghana could face a coup d’état if current socio-economic conditions persist.
Speaking on Anopa Bofo on Monday, March 30, 2026, Mr. Odike revealed that recent research indicates a growing number of Ghanaian youths are inclined to support a military takeover.
“Fifty-six percent (56%) of Ghanaians say if there is an attempted coup, they will support it. With that research, what did the leaders do about it? What are they doing to change that mindset?” he questioned.
According to him, although the adoption of democracy has addressed some systemic challenges, critical issues such as widespread poverty, persistent inequality, and the uneven distribution of national resources continue to threaten stability.
He argued that the concentration of resources among a few individuals fosters frustration and discontent, creating conditions that could lead to unconstitutional disruptions.
Mr. Odike further suggested that strengthening Ghana’s multi-party democratic system could yield significant benefits, including poverty reduction, discouraging selfish leadership, curbing robbery, and dismantling the entrenched “winner-takes-all” political culture.
His comments add to ongoing national conversations about governance, economic hardship, and public confidence in democratic institutions.
