President John Dramani Mahama has stated that discussions around LGBTQ issues are not the most pressing concern for Ghana, stressing that government remains focused on addressing the basic needs of citizens.
Speaking with the Civil Society Organization at the Presidency on Monday, March 30, 2026, Mr. Mahama noted that while the subject of LGBTQ rights continues to generate debate both locally and internationally, Ghana still faces more urgent challenges, including access to education, healthcare, jobs, food, clothing and shelter.
“It is not the most important issue we face as a nation. We are still grappling with the provision of basic needs such as education, healthcare, jobs, food, clothing and shelter,” he said.
He described the issue as sensitive and emotive, even in advanced democracies, adding that it must be handled carefully within Ghana’s constitutional and cultural framework.
“Our position is guided by our constitution, respect for human rights and dignity of all persons, and the need to preserve social cohesion,” he added.
According to the President, the ongoing debate over the private members’ bill before Parliament has sparked a complex national conversation, with strong and differing views across society.
“These issues must be addressed through democratic processes, our core values, dialogue and the rule of law,” he stressed.
Mr. Mahama emphasised that Ghana’s approach will be guided by respect for human rights, the dignity of all persons, and the need to maintain social cohesion.
He stressed that such matters should be resolved through democratic processes, dialogue, and adherence to the rule of law.
The President also acknowledged reactions from international partners, including recent developments involving institutions such as Lincoln University, noting that these underscore the need for continued engagement based on mutual respect.
“Ghana will continue to uphold its democratic values while engaging constructively with the international community,” he said.
Mr. Mahama assured that Ghana will remain committed to upholding its democratic values while constructively engaging the international community on sensitive issues.
He further called for balanced discussions that reflect the country’s priorities and realities, reiterating government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of Ghanaians.
