The Accra Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt to identify and arrest persons involved in a disturbance and the unlawful discharge of firearms at the Kotoku Onion Market within the Adjen Kotoku District.
The incident stems from tension among five onion sellers’ associations over disagreements regarding the distribution of onions supplied by foreign traders.
This resulted in heightened unrest within the market on April 6, 2026, when gunshots were heard from an unidentified location during clashes among some members of the associations.
Police officers responded promptly to the scene; however, the individuals responsible for the gunfire could not immediately be traced.
In a statement issued Tuesday, April 7, police announced that efforts had commenced to apprehend those involved.
Meanwhile, calm has been restored, and patrols have been intensified in the area to prevent further disturbances, the Service said.
Police noted that it has engaged the leadership of the five associations and assured them of cooperation in maintaining peace and order.
“The Accra Regional Police Command cautions the public against engaging in acts of violence or unlawful use of firearms and urges all parties to resolve disputes through lawful means.”
The Command further assured the public that the situation remains under control and continues to be closely monitored while efforts are underway to de-escalate tensions.
