The Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has questioned why government doubled the budget for catering and security for the 2026 World Cup from $5,000 to $10,000 each.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, October 10, 2026, the MP noted that in 2022, government paid $5,000 for a caterer and $5,000 for security during the World Cup, but under the current budget, both figures have been doubled.
“Is this a reset or a more expensive version of the same system?”
According to him, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government promised Ghanaians a reset, but is now spending more on the same items without clear justification.
“If the old figures were justified, what justifies the increase? And if they were not, why repeat them?”
Mr. Assafuah also questioned why an extra $10,000 was paid to an official to handle World Cup payments when all payments were done electronically.
He said the Sports Minister, Kofi Adams, told a Parliamentary Committee that no physical cash was carried during the tournament, and that all payments were made through direct bank transfers which attracted charges and commissions.
He therefore questioned why an additional $10,000 should be paid to an official who is already employed and paid by government to perform official duties, stressing that the debate is not about who held whose purse, but about value for money.
“You cannot promise Ghanaians a reset and then double selected expenses without providing a clear justification. Rather than accuse me of a personal attack, answer the questions. Parliamentary oversight is my duty; accountability is your responsibility,” he stated.
The post comes after corruption allegations raised by the New Patriotic Party Minority in Parliament over the 2026 World Cup budget and their call for the dismissal of Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku.
