The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has advised Ghanaian nationals in Johannesburg, Durban, and surrounding areas to exercise heightened vigilance following reports of ongoing protest activities.
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 10, 2026, the High Commission said multiple protests have been reported in the Johannesburg and Durban Central Business District (CBD) areas, with demonstrators in Johannesburg expected to converge on the Constitutional Court.
It said the developments could result in significant traffic disruptions, road closures, restricted movement, and possible confrontations between protesters and law enforcement authorities.
The High Commission urged Ghanaians in the affected areas to avoid protest locations, large gatherings and areas experiencing public disturbances, and to limit non-essential travel to the Johannesburg and Durban CBDs until the situation stabilises.
It also advised them to anticipate possible road closures and traffic disruptions and use alternative routes where necessary, monitor local news and security advisories issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and relevant municipal authorities, and avoid confrontations with protesters.
Ghanaians were further encouraged to remain in regular contact with family members and community leaders when travelling through areas experiencing unrest, and to report any threats, intimidation or incidents of violence to the nearest police station and inform the High Commission where consular assistance may be required.
The High Commission also urged members of the Ghanaian community to remain calm, exercise restraint and comply with lawful instructions issued by South African security and law enforcement authorities, and to refrain from circulating unverified information that could generate unnecessary fear or panic.
It stressed that the safety, security, and welfare of all Ghanaian nationals in South Africa remain of paramount importance.
