The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has signed an offtake agreement with International Service Solution (ISS), marking the second agreement of its kind signed by the Authority in 2026.
The gesture intensifies efforts by the Authority to expand freight transportation and private-sector participation in Ghana’s railway sector.
The Chief Executive Officer of GRDA, Dr. Frederick Appoh, expressed optimism that consignment under the agreement would move from the Tema Rail Head to the Mpakadan Rail Head by Friday, 16 October 2026, subject to operational readiness.
He again highlighted GRDA’s growing role in Ghana’s supply chain and logistics sector, emphasising the Authority’s commitment to positioning rail transportation as a reliable and efficient option for moving goods across the country.
Dr. Appoh further disclosed that the Authority expects to receive three locomotives and 20 wagons by December 2026.
“Under the anticipated arrangement, one locomotive will be allocated to GRDA’s operations, while the remaining two locomotives and 20 wagons are intended for a private-sector company to support the expansion of freight services.”
Dr. Appoh revealed that approximately 2,500 to 3,000 containers have been moved since the commencement of cargo operations in September 2026.
He noted that this progress underscores the potential of rail freight to facilitate cargo movement and strengthen Ghana’s supply chain and logistics network.
Representatives of International Service Solution expressed their appreciation to GRDA’s leadership for the opportunity to partner with the Authority, describing the agreement as a significant milestone in the partnership between the two organisations.
They also appreciated the increasing involvement of the private sector in railway freight operations, expressing enthusiasm about the opportunity to leverage the value of rail transportation to improve logistics and promote the efficient movement of goods.
This agreement forms part of GRDA’s broader strategy to attract private-sector investment, increase freight volumes and optimise the use of railway infrastructure.
Through strategic partnerships such as this, GRDA continues to advance its commitment to making rail transportation an integral part of Ghana’s supply chain and logistics network, while supporting more efficient cargo movement and the sustainable development of the railway sector.
