The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is set to receive 2,000 additional laptops under the government’s One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), as part of efforts to expand access to digital skills training at the institution.
This was announced by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, during a working visit to the university on Wednesday, October 14.

The visit formed part of his tour of the Ashanti Region to assess the implementation of the programme and identify opportunities to extend its reach.
Mr. Nartey toured some of the learning centres on campus and engaged students on their experiences with the initiative, while encouraging more students to participate.
According to the Minister, the additional laptops will facilitate the establishment of 40 new learning centres, bringing the total number at KNUST from 10 to 50.
The university initially received 500 laptops to equip its first 10 centres.
“The additional laptops will support the establishment of 40 new learning centres across the university, increasing the number of centres from 10 to 50. KNUST initially received 500 laptops to equip the first 10 centres,” he said.

He added that this is expected to provide more students and prospective learners with access to digital skills training and equip them with competencies relevant to Ghana’s growing digital economy.
“The expansion is expected to bring digital skills training within easier reach of more students and other prospective learners across the university community, providing increased opportunities to develop skills relevant to Ghana’s growing digital economy,” he stated.
The Ministry, according to him, is also exploring partnerships with other tertiary institutions in the Ashanti Region, including Kumasi Technical University, to broaden the programme’s coverage.
