The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on the government to provide clear details on the implementation of its 24-hour economy policy, particularly the proposed initiative of creating one job per shift.
Speaking at a leaders’ media briefing to mark the commencement of the Third Meeting of the Second Session of the Nith Parliament, the Leader questioned the government’s commitment to delivering on its employment promises amid concerns about youth unemployment.
He cited figures from the Ghana Statistical Service indicating that youth unemployment among persons aged 15 to 24 stands at 32.4 per cent.
The Minority Leader called for clarification on the specific institutions responsible for implementing the policy and the practical measures being taken to create sustainable employment opportunities.
He further indicated that the Minority would closely scrutinise the 2027 Budget to determine whether it contains concrete measures and adequate financial commitments to addressing unemployment.
Comparing the policy to the previous One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative, Mr Afenyo-Markin argued that the private sector requires adequate government support to create jobs.
He specifically highlighted the need for incentives to support businesses with access to raw materials, machinery, and a reliable electricity supply.
Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed the importance of practical policies and an enabling business environment in addressing youth unemployment and promoting job creation.
