The United Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (UMMAAG) has cautioned mobile money agents against individuals demanding money to facilitate the change or transfer of ownership of their Agent SIMs.
UMMAAG said the warning follows purported reports of individuals approaching mobile money agents with promises to facilitate the transfer of ownership of their Agent SIMs in exchange for money, only for such transactions to turn out to be fraudulent.
It also noted that some individuals were impersonating staff of Mobile Money Fintech Ltd (MMFL) to take advantage of agents seeking to regularise or transfer ownership of their Agent SIMs.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the association said the change-of-ownership and regularisation exercise had not yet commenced, warning agents against dealing with individuals claiming to have the capacity to facilitate the process for a fee.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Mobile Money Fintech Ltd (MMFL) and other Partners do not charge Agents for transfer of ownership,” It stated.
UMMAAG has therefore strongly advised agents across the country not to make payments to individuals claiming to have special access, connections or the ability to facilitate the process.
The association further urged agents to remain vigilant and patient amid the ongoing Know Your Customer (KYC) update exercise, particularly those concerned about losing access to their Mobile Money Agent accounts.
In the meantime, agents have been encouraged to complete the ongoing KYC update exercise, with those experiencing difficulties advised to visit the nearest MTN office for assistance and also called on MMFL to address technical challenges surrounding the KYC update exercise to ensure its smooth completion by all agents on or before December 31, 2026.
“We are also urging MMFL, having acknowledged the extension granted, that, the technical challenges surrounding the ongoing KYC UPDATE EXERCISE must be addressed to enable smooth completion by all Agent on or before the 31st December,2026.”
The association added that it will continue to protect the interests of all mobile money agents and warned agents not to pay anyone for a service that has not officially commenced.
