Dela Edem criticises Akufo-Addo’s decision to sign ‘unbeneficial’ agreement with nurses

Political Commentator and Head of Corporate Communication at the Mineral Commission, Dela Edem, has delivered a sharp critique of the Akufo-Addo administration’s decision to grant funeral, fuel, and other unbeneficial allowances to nurses and midwives.

Mr Edem contends that the decision made by the immediate past New Patriotic Party (NPP) regime was a calculated move to complicate matters for the John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration. He suggests that, as a result, citizens may perceive their government as underperforming.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Thursday, June 12, 2025, with Ohemaa Sekyiwaa, Mr Edem asserted that the agreement imposes significant financial repercussions on the current administration, which has inherited a considerable burden within the healthcare sector and among the various authorities involved.

“This demand made by nurses and midwives and signed by the previous government will place a strain on our economic environment.

“The government is committed to engaging in earnest discussions with the striking officials to review the agreement and assess its sustainability,” he claimed.

The political commentator emphatically noted that during his tenure as Deputy Director of Education, he did not receive any such incentives as funeral, fuel, NHIS renewal, or distance-covered allowances.

He urged the nurses to recognise that while their concerns may be legitimate, they need to seek proper avenues for resolution.

“We’re committed to supporting our beloved healthcare workers, especially those in villages and rural areas, but we need to ensure that any agreements are fiscally responsible,” stated Mr Edem.

“We’ll be working closely with stakeholders and the relevant authorities to find a solution that works for everyone.”
