70 Years of BASU: UG Chapter sets sights on youth development, local mentorship

The University of Ghana chapter of the Brong Ahafo Students’ Union (BASU) has officially kicked off its 70th-anniversary celebration, recommitting itself to elevating local youth and supporting community growth across the Bono region.

Addressing attendees at the launch event on Saturday, July 25, 2026, BASU executive Mr. Godfred Amponsah emphasized that current student leaders are determined to carry forward the torch lit by the union’s trailblazing founders and notable alumni—such as the late Emiratus George Benneh, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and Ameyaw Kyeremeh, all of whom have left significant marks on Ghanaian public life.

“Our goal is to see a new generation of our youth excel both academically and professionally, securing opportunities not just here in Ghana, but on the global stage,” Amponsah said.

Central to this year’s mission is an effort to narrow the educational disparity between rural and urban areas. By taking active roles as mentors, BASU hopes to encourage students in rural Bono towns to set their sights on higher education, particularly at premier institutions like the University of Ghana.

“As university students, we owe a duty to our communities,” Amponsah stressed. “Through direct mentorship, we can motivate younger students to reach higher.”

Established seven decades ago, BASU remains one of the country’s most enduring regional student associations, originally created to foster solidarity, scholastic achievement, and civic service among youth from the legacy Brong Ahafo Region.

Amponsah also voiced confidence that building stronger ties between university scholars and their home towns will naturally spur local leadership, boost academic success, and spur long-term regional development.

To mark the milestone year, BASU plans to roll out an array of initiatives, including scholarship opportunities, professional career coaching, and community outreach projects throughout the Bono Region.
