Ghana has taken steps to integrate fire safety education into the basic school curriculum to equip children with practical knowledge from an early age.
The initiative is part of advancing efforts by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) and Ulster University.
Under the leadership of the Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, the initiative seeks to equip children with practical knowledge of fire prevention, safe behaviours and what to do in an emergency from an early age.
The programme, initially developed by the GNFS and Ulster University, has been refined through collaborative engagements with education and fire safety experts and presented to the Chief Fire Officer for consideration.
When implemented, the curriculum is expected to build a culture of safety and reduce fire incidents across the country.
