The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has cautioned the public against indiscriminate waste disposal as they contribute to floods in the city.
According to the Ga East NADMO Director, Seth Kissi, choked gutters and poor drainage systems in the Ga East Municipality have been major causes of floods.
He advised the people to change their attitudes towards waste management, as waste materials choke the gutters and stifle the free flow of water, which causes flooding during heavy rains as happened yesterday.
Mr. Kissi was speaking on Wednesday evening floods that hit some parts of Accra following the over two-hour downpour.
“There are drainage systems at the top of Achimota overpass so I asked myself why water fails to pass through? Is it because the lanes down there are choked thus preventing the water to flow?”
“But it all boils down to how we dispose waste. It is just a matter of being careful and realizing that when there’s flood it affects us and our families in many ways so the way we handle our waste is important”, he told Kofi Adoma Nwanwani on Angel FM’s Anopa Bofo morning show.
He continued that, though NADMO has put in place proper measures in making flood-related deaths become a thing of the past in Greater Accra, our attitude needs to be checked.
That notwithstanding, Mr. Kissi noted that the organisation has presented some recommendations to Ghana Highway Authorities on some flyovers in the municipality to help avert possible flood disasters in the region.
“With regards to the Achimota overpass, we have done some research on it and given a few recommendations to the Highway Authorities to work on it” he said.
